M. Brock 1958 Journal Aug 13 Barrow, Alaska Prepared to go to Wainwright but did not make it. Processed lemmings Aug 14 Checked and counted out 300 + trips to take to Wainwright. Processed a few lemmings Aug 15 Left for Wainwright, Alaska Left for Wainwright about 10:00 with Porter Eckhert as pilot. Circled beach several times because of extreme fog. Flew about and landed about 1200. I got settled in the school house after meeting the new school teacher Wilson Eckles, his wife and four children. Mr. Eckles is a tremendous change for the better since H. Crawford. Walked up and down beach waiting plane to return from Karale with Bill Mahr and Merl Solomon, the cutter who will stay with me and help run the lines. I also walked about on the tundra during my walking until the plane arrived (about 1800). I did not see any lemmings (or new sign), jayeggs or olds. While I was walking on the beach, I observed four separate groups of people (natives) walking the beach gathering beach coal for burning - the largest pieces are at the most five inches across.
