July 21 Pitt Point, Alaska
(where a stop over was to be made), "Bey"
decided to wait for the weather to
clear in the morning.
July 22 Barrow, Alaska
Got up at 0600 in hopes of leaving
soon. We waited until about 1100
when conditions improved a little.
We departed, and after a stop over at
Cape Simpson arrived safely at Barrow.
During the flight between Pitt Point
and Cape Simpson, which was all flown
at an altitude of 50 to 100 feet in
order to see anything, approximately 1000
caribou were seen. Groups after groups
of about 100 were seen grazing.
Royal Shanks reports that he was out at
the point and that there was a location
there that looked like it might have had
a population of lemmings recently. He also
has reported seeing a live lemming near
Wolchley Slough recently.
July 23
I went with Don Stephens to the point (Barrow)
where reports (from Don and Royal Shanks)
stated that lemmings were present.
All sign seen by me was of winter
activity. Many old runways & droppings
and loose hay were present, but no
