Atkasuk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska
to the area just across from the old
Atkasuk village about three miles
north from the coal mine. There ground
squirrels and much ground squirrel
activity seen in this area. During the
entire trip only three julls were seen and
three jaegers. On the beach were many
caribon tracks as well as wolf and
fox tracks. A yellow wagtail nest was found
in the area. Also more lemming nests
were found, although most of them
are empty some still contain the remains
of dead animals. Dan has been keeping a
record of the number of nest with dead
animals.
Both Dicostonyx prepared as study skins
A red poll and a savannah sparrow,
both collected yesterday, were prepared as a
study skin.
Because two Picastonyx was caught in
trancet II yesterday, transects I and II
were checked this morning. No mammals
were caught.
The Weir plane made its weekly
trip in today, so we loaded some of our
material on the plane in expectation of
tomorrow's departure.
