M. Brock 1958 June 30 Journal Atkasuk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska to the area just across from the old Atkasuk village about three miles north from the coal mine. There ground squirrels and much ground squirrel activity seen in this area. During the entire trip only three julls were seen and three jaegers. On the beach were many caribon tracks as well as wolf and fox tracks. A yellow wagtail nest was found in the area. Also more lemming nests were found, although most of them are empty some still contain the remains of dead animals. Dan has been keeping a record of the number of nest with dead animals. Both Dicostonyx prepared as study skins A red poll and a savannah sparrow, both collected yesterday, were prepared as a study skin. Because two Picastonyx was caught in trancet II yesterday, transects I and II were checked this morning. No mammals were caught. The Weir plane made its weekly trip in today, so we loaded some of our material on the plane in expectation of tomorrow's departure.
