M. Brock 1958 June 25 Utqasuk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska two weeks ahead of Barrow with all the grasses and willows as nice green and with many flowers in bloom. The plane left and we checked our belongings and found to see what we had. There was to be two flights into Mead and we were expecting our meat supply to come in on the second flight since we had checked our food and not found any meat. No meat was on the plane on the second flight nor any mosquito repellent which is badly needed. Very little lemming activity signs present here. Traps VI, VII, VIII were set out in the afternoon. While setting out VII we saw four caribou pass by about a half mile away. A few minutes later we heard some rifle shots. One of the two men at the village (there are 10 people there now, 6 are children) had shot one of the calves. After finishing our trapline, we went to Barigo with this fellow. For five pounds of coffee and about two pounds of sugar we secured the hind quarters of this calf caribou. Many nest were observed - golden plover, phalarope and pintail. A yellow wagtail was shot and prepared as a study skin.
