E.M. Brock 1958 Journal June 9 Wainwright, Alaska of snow. Then the sun came out again and melted the snow and the cold weather then froze the water thus giving an icy coating to the tundra. Then according to Mr. Crawford (and Brown) there was a large lemmings die off from being exposed to the open. "Dead lemmings were everywhere" From looking at the tundra today, I would say there was certainly little sign of lemmings activity. Robert Rausch who had been here a few days ago returned to Banow with the same comment. The three hundred snap traps were placed out on transects I and II. Very little sign of lemming activity was noticed and only one Brunnich jaeger (passing through) was seen flying NW. [Mr. Crawford just came into the room - he sure likes to talk] Weather was very windy and cold today. June 10 The A.R.A. clothing types an individual the moment he steps out of the plane at Wainwright. Constantly, all day long, little eskimo boys will come up to me asking "you buy mice" or "you buy lemmings" or "you buy jaeger".
