M. Brock 1957 Journal Aug 7 Wainwright, Northern Alaska and while I was passing Stake 4.8 of line III a lemming ran by and was caught by hand and killed. This was the only lemming seen by my During my entire walk about the Transect. On three other occasions I heard [illegible] in the undergrowth which may have been lemmings running away. On one other occasion I heard squeeking which sounded like two lemmings fighting, once again I didn't find anything when I looked. There is a striking difference in the amount of lemming activity signs here at Wainwright as compared with Barrow. Although I saw only the one live lemming, runways which appear heavily used are abundant. Clippings and fresh droppings are also abundant Nearly all the time I was out in the field there was at least one jaeger in view. In all I saw perhaps 40-50 jaegers during my walk - some may have been repeated observations. All three jaegers were seen. Just from today's observations no one type of jaeger is more abundant than the others.
