M. Brock 1957 Journal Barrow, Northern Alaska July 5 Traps lines IX and X were placed out in the afternoon. July 6 Transects IX and X were checked in the morning and afternoon. A utilization check was made on transect X. A ruddy turnstone was prepared as a study skin. July 7 Checked transects IX and X in mornings and afternoons. Although it had rained heavily last night only 10 traps were off altogether. Drew up forms for utilization check recordings. Put up study skins of red-backed sandpiper and semi-palmated plover. Prepared skin + skeleton of very young brown age lemming (see 'raising of youngs'). July 8 Made utilization checks of lines III A + III B although there seems to be some confusion as to which is which. Another of the litter of lemmings died. It was weighed, measured and skin and skull saved. Other lemmings also processed. Traps IX and X were checked in mornings and evenings. Lines returned. July 9 Transects III A and III B were set out. During the two hours while I was setting out these lines, I kept watching a snowy owl perched on the treacherous ground.
