June 29 Barow, Northern Alaska
Haylines I and II were checked
in the morning and evenings without
a catch being recorded. Transect I
had one trap missing. Utilization
checks were made on transects VII
and VIII. In making the utilization
checks for I, II and VII I was
seeing clippings under 'prior activity',
all old clippings, whether they were standing
or not [that is old clippings lying in the ground]
For all other utilization checks I will only
record clipping as prior activity if it
is a cut grass blade which has a very
short dead portion and a basal portion
which is green. [Transects I, II + VII rechecked 7-16-57
(see notes)]
I am still seeing one litter of 6
lemmings, and caught adult
lemmus and one Microtus.
June 30 Processed a few lemmings, packed
dried skins in towels, put away skulls,
then some more skulls. I + II picked up
July 1 Set out haylines IV and VI and
also took utilization count on both
of these transects
