June 17
Atkasuk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska
Transects III and IV were checked in
the morning and the only catch was a
longspur in line IV. A walk was
taken south west of the wargian in
hopes of placing some spot traps.
No good localities were found. One
Pomarine jaeger nest was discovered.
I have still not seen a live lemming
in the field at Atkasuk.
June 18
Checked transects III and IV
this morning and also picked up
the traps and then rowed across
the Mead to set out the last line,
transect VI. While setting out
the traps near stacker one I caught
a microtus alive.
Bill Maher went back to Barrow
today.
June 19
Checked trapline VI in the morning, no
animals caught. Collected the red pole nest
and one egg since it had been unattended.
Egg was cold, nest wet from rain and snow.
Light snow flurries in the morning. The
microtus caught yesterday is still alive. A
longspur nest with a newly hatched young
was found near the coal mine (see account)
and a pintail nest with 9 eggs
