Athawk, Mead River Coal Mine, Alaska
June 12 stomachs of caribou left in the tundra by the eskimos. No sign of new lemming workings were found and up to date a live lemming has not been seen by me in the field at Athawak. Three northern phalopes were shot by me and will be prepared as study skins. These birds were on a pond adjacent to the coal mine shaft.
Perhaps it should be mentioned that on Monday the 9th, some people came over from the village seeking our assistance since one of the old men in the village was very sick. Bill and I went over to look at him. He could not see us or hear anyone. He was apparently very uncomfortable and in pain. We learned from his wife (through Chester Langley) that he'd been passing black wine and that this "affliction" had started that morning. We did what little we could and told them to get the man into town (Barrow) on tomorrow's (tuesday's) plane. The man's illness grew more serious and he passed away during that night. Relatives flew in the next day and Reverend Waites also came for the burial.
