June 8
The first shipment of 200 lemmings
from Wainwright came in this morning.
Processed five of these before leaving for Mead R.,
Atkusuk,
Mead River, Alaska
Setting out Transect I area, very marshy
stacks 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 surrounded by
water. Three traps placed as near as possible
to each post along edge of pond.
So far runways are very ill defined and
little actual lemmings one is visible.
I am now at stacks 6 and have still not
seen a good runway or sign of lemming.
At 4:45 one long tailed jaeger seen
in vicinity of transect I at about 5:15
a jaeger seen around Transect I ± 2
at 6:30 3 jaegers seen near pond at
end of Transect I. 6:45 Jaegers north of
Transect I.
The second transect was finished
setting out at about 10:00 P.M. At about
8:45 a long tailed jaeger was seen flying
northeast. This second transect line is not
as marshy as the first and shows very
little sign of any lemmings workings, at the
time of year a steam has to be used in
order to reach Transect 2
