Noted numbers of this species all along the Wailu River valley right from far up in the mountains 10 miles from the sea to the mouth itself. 4/5/39. Seems rather shy, a number seen along the river near the camp shows considerable variation in shade of plumage. 5/5/39. Noted after the heavy night of heavy rain the river was in floods this species left its usual haunts along the river margins & fed in flocks of 20+ more on the grass paddocks (river flats) along the margin of the rivers. Are somewhat shy: are persecuted to a limited extent by natives for eating. 15/5/39. Noted this species present on quite a small river in another valley. 9/6/39. Two were seen far up the head waters of the Wailu River between 1000 + 1500ft A.S.L. 17/6/39. Noted that for some unknown reason this species was today seen in small numbers on the grass flats, clbt feeding but very restless. 19/6/39. Again across flats but apparently chasing each other for mating reasons. 20/6/39. Common & feeling much.
