56. APLONIS STRIATA STRIATA:-- (Gmelin) A.M.N.H. has TWELVE (12) Wants FOUR. Exchange value FAIR. Total Permit No. 8 No. for Toumea. 3 Remarks. 6/3/39. Seems fairly abundant. Appears the same as the Loyalties. 14/3/39. A few heard & seen very high in forests. Are shy & wary. 15/3/39. It is evident this species lives mostly in the higher level of the forest, seldom coming low. Is exceedingly shy. 16/3/39. A number seen. 1 shot, very poor specimen, bad mount L.T.V. SK34C 3 1/4+ 17/3/39. Numbers heard & seen, wespature[illegible] all but heaviest rain continued to feed. Apparently live almost entirely above 40 or 60 ft. One shot [SK 35A] Quinn. L.T.V. 20/3/39. More than usual seen today. Lives in small flocks up to half a dozen, almost entirely in true tops. Favours perching on bare dead trunks, limbs & twigs. This species appears to leave a sentry on watch while others are feeding. 23/3/39. Always seen in small parties. Very shy & wary. 24/3/39. Several parties seen on wing. 27/3/39. Several flocks & family parties seen heard. very active. 28/3/39. Several flocks seen. Two birds seen feeding near ground, never seen in forest before. Maybe heaviest rain responsible for high feeding. 30/3/39. Several parties seen, all high up. WAIRU 3/5/39. Seems larger than Paroques area. Has much more pleasing calls. Seems abundant about guavas. Up to 30/5/39. Often seen about cultivations. Not exceedingly abundant now there. Moves about the district a lot. 17/6/39. Entirely absent from area where numbers were seen previous day. 19/6/39. Very common across river flats where it was [illegible] 2 days ago. 20/6/39. Fairly numerous. Behaviour normal.
