PACHYCEPHALA PECTORALIS CALEDONICA RUFIVENTRIS :- (GMELIN).
A.M.N.H. has. TWENTY (20) Wants. EIGHT (8). each coast atleast.
Exchange value. GOOD. Total Permit No. 13. 24 if NEC. No. for eVoume.. 3.
Remarks. SAID TO BE 2 SPECIES. SIZE VARIATION ON 2 COASTS: IMPORTANT CHECK THIS
6/3/39. A small species somewhat like drutjann. In shocking moult.
Imm. appear common & full grown.
14/3/39. Exceedingly common in forests. Feed much in low shrubs near ground, but also to a large extent high up, though I doubt it often goes above 30ft.
15/3/39. Imm. are very friendly & approach to calls, almost pitching on observer; is necessary the frighten them away for shooting.
One shot.
16/3/39. Very common but adults are in shocking moult. Very friendly.
a number of specimens of birds in bad moult were examined, 2 Qd. had all tail except R.1 + L.1. in moult; order seemed to be 2,4,3,5,6,
gonads were 1/2 - & 1/2 +; body moult was heavy & W. were 4,1,3,14.
Females appear to be somewhat behind males in moult, probably having continued attending to young for longer periods.
I noticed and adult (shot) chasing a young away evidently meaning it.
2 specimens collected [SK34E] & adult [K34F] & min.
17/3/39. Very active because of rainy day
20/3/39. Feeding high mostly, generally above 20 ft. By the number of imm. in comparison with adults, I should say this species breeds twice a year.
27/3/39. Exceedingly common & active. Imm + ? plumage outnumber adult by about 10 to 1.
28/3/39. Common. One female seen copulating; shot & lost.
30/3/39. Mostly feeding middle + upper layers today. Very active in run.
WAIRU 3/5/39. One male ad. of this species seen within a few yards of camp, or more seen
5/5/39. Possibly a highland bird. Only rufiventris sees hereabouts mostly.
up to 30/5/39. Is present but rare, one adult + 1 imm of this species only seen
