July 3 Point Barrow, Alaska
Today is a day which will last long in
my memory for today was Jaeger day.
The wind was blowing strongly and
cold off Elson Lagoon as Gil and I
began dragging LE for nests and it
had been raining periodically. The
first half of the east side proved
uneventful except for the possibility
of a Redback Sandpiper nest. As
Dave approached stake 5 Gil called
over to me and less than 200' away
were about 10 Jaegers! They flew
up and some came over & investigated
me, their unbounded curiosity driving
them within 10' of me! An unprecedented
bit of jaeger behavior! Although the
juns were in the weeds a 1/3th of a mile away I
quickly returned to the vehicle for them.
The jaegers had dropped down again off
to the transect so Gil & I quietly stalked
towards them, 9 to the shore side & Gil 50' &
the west. There was continual movement
among these "pirates of the tundra", me picking
up & flying 25yds & dropping down again,
apparently feeding activity judging from
stomach contents. When they finally
flew, again they came close to me
