13 July Patmeega River, 2mi SE Cape Soling, Alaska.
Still bitter cold and snowy. All the high
hills are covered. It snowed while I was
the traps in the a.m. and a half inch of
snow covered some of the traps. We are
burning our meat to the last tank of gas
& keep warm.
14 July still occasional snow squalls. Towards
date afternoon it changed to rain which
continued until 2 a.m. when Red Chortle
Leon flight song indicated clearing.
at 4 a.m. heard Paleolated Warbler
singing
15 July moved to a hot tent! What a change after
4 days of snowing in the middle of
July! Birds active again. Collected a
Barn Swallow and the tent. Waited
for plane — if it doesn't arrive by
1 p.m. we are walking out, having
used all our gas and most of the food.
Put off walking until 3 p.m. and got 25mi
out of camp when it showed up. Arrived Bazar
about 2:00. Noted 20+ Soring Gulls from Lige
& Stull Cliff. 2 whales seen on beach, one
near Pt. Lay and the other near Hedd Clif.
Many dead walrus, only 3 with heads!
Saw a gizzly at begg of spit south
of Point Lay.
