Childs 1954 29 3 Aug. Patranger River, Cape Sabine, Alaska Overcast and strong north wind that brought 4 caribou back the area and Pete got one. He also found at long last a fox den towards Wolverine Mt. with 2 foxes. They gave him quite a time. I got mule deer and collected lichen. Did some writing. 4 Aug. Overcast. Pete found another fox den near 2nd Ridge. Stayed in camp after checking traps across the river. Later saw 2 squirrels. 5 Aug. Pete got 3 caribou past 2nd ridge. Heard a wolf howl on Owl Ridge. Longspurs many in large numbers to NE in meadow and west in swamp! 6 Aug. Brought in rest of canteen this morning. Cleaned and waxed this p.m. Skinned a squirrel on the ridge. Waited for plane—in rain. 7 Aug. Pete went after mammoth & I checked for traps—and got one. While tying it up, he caught me on the thumb. Abet clean + waxed. Saw mosquitoes & flies. 8 Aug. Pete played Rang and the Roxy with a fox on Owl Ridge. Slota Wheaton after supper. 9 Aug. Set transects 1 & 2. Looked for wheat ears along ridges without success. Birds on the move. Dovetails, Golden Plover, Curlew, Pintail, Longspurs, Pipits, Wagtails, Red Phalarope. Pete got another caribou. 17 Snowy Owls in a 360° swing. Rain.
