Childs 1958 20 8 July Litunager River, 16 miles SE Cape Sabine, Alaska High overcast and no wind. Mosquitoes await our leaving the Tent. Walked to the two ponds down river. There we found a 9 Pintail and 27 White-wing Scoters and 19 Surf Scoter. I shot one and broke its wing but we were unable to get it as it could still dive. There were gulls, 10 Northern Phalaropes, 2 Dovitches, and 6-10 Bartled Sandpipers. On the river were 4 Oldsquaws. At the cliff we found a Rough-legged Hawk nest with 4 young, 2 of which and the adult & were collected. The first staged on top range and a Third Rough-legged came by. The nest was located about 4ft from where the Duck Hawk nest was last year. A great deal of sloughing off had taken place and there was one soil slips of 30 x 50' with underlying ice showing. Two Harlequin 99 were on the river. 2 ravens flew over. Hardly any wind all day long and plenty of mosquitoes 9 July Cany day - not feeling well, perhaps due to tightly rotten caribou meat. Set out two transects in late p.m. Tried to get Duck Hawks again with no success. Found the nest to be located about 15 ft away on top of bluff from old nest and it contained 4 very small young.
