chiles 1958 JOURNAL 8 June Pitwezen River, Cape Sabine Alaska a cold north wind was blowing strong this morning. after breakfast we completed T3 + T4, moving traps to T5 + T6. Pete shot another caribou across the river, this one had nostril flies (31). Brought the meat, had an early supper and shinned. 9 June Set out T5 + T6 by moon. We then took boat down river and out to the ice. Collected a Brant, 4 Harlequin, 2 Murre, and Sabine gull. Seals of three species were seen; Ring, Spotted and Bearded, only one of the latter two and maybe 50 of the Ringed Seal. Pete hunted them with no success. 10 June Pete shot a Canada goose off the bar and shared 3 others. Ran traps line and conserved plot #1. A Sandhill Dove flew over. Pete shaned a Marmot, shot a 3 Harlequin, Raven, 2 Sasanqua Sparrow. Saw 2 Glaciers - winged gulls on our drape. Finally got a Lemmus in T-60. 11 June a flock of 6 cranes came up to ponds across river. Plane came with Mark and Bill Aiken. Mark to replace Pete and Mohan to visit and look over jaeger situation. Had a heavy rain and Thunderstorm about 1800. It set off about 40% of the traps.
