31 May Pitmegea River, Cape Saline, Alaska
about 1700 saw bear near cabin. Pete
collected it; a very light Tundra gizzly.
Both Snowy Owls and Short-eared Owls
seen. Lots of mouse sign noted in swamps.
Snow along banks is about as far along as
it was in mid June last year. Marsh is
quite dry.
1 June Painted stakes for breeding plots and
distributed traps on T, & T2. Rained most
of the time during this operation. Susannah
Sparrows arrived. Ford Pintail not.
Three Cabinon seen across from camp +
one arctic Fox. Worked around camp setting
and organizing. Found our 16' boat was sent
out with a 14' keel which presented a problem!
Intinsurmountable!
2 June Censused breeding birds on Plot 1 in am and
plot 2 in p.m. Found 13 longspur nests.
Northern Phalarope seen. Set out T1, & T2 u a.m.
Pete went to the river mouth and collected
a 5 Spectacled Eider, 5 Rock Ptarmigan, and
2 Golden Plover. He also saw two ducks, probably,
White-wing Scoters.
3 June Ran transects in a.m. Ennaway dock watched
Cabinon on far side of latest Marsh. They
were frightened by a Grizzly or Owl
Ridge. He turned and ran when the can
