children 1957 Journal 25. Aug. 2 Pitnegea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska Whidy overcast day until away when it began to clean. Wrote most day. Saw a bull caribou on far ridge to the East and we took off after it, being out of fresh meat. There were three of them, and we got two, one apiece! Found another juvenile boy. Tail jaeger across the river. I had been slightly suspicious to not in that area but this confirmed. Aug. 3 During the night the winds blew the boat 30' to the water and across to the other side when it now resides. Winds are worst to date. Aug 4 Weather clearing. In p.m. we got a load of coal from the vein a few hundred yards down river, as river has dropped some and wind stopped, I braced the berrny deep and waded across after boat. Water temperature 44°, current swift. By fools luck I made it over and back although in the middle I had my doubts. Set transects 1+2 at 8/100. Herd of 75 caribou on Loon Marsh which ran off shortly after we started setting traps. I turned but & he due it a Grizzly that came over the ridge 500 feet from me. [illegible] shot at it but it kept coming my river. Dad took aim on.
