24July Pitmegea River, 12mi. SE Cape Sabine, Alaska
Weather good and we got underway after picking up
Tapes, 1045. Flushed & White-wing Scoter. On ponds we
saw 9 Pintail + 7 gung, Pacific loons and nearly Pectoral Sand.
Northern Phalarope, Dunlin, Savannah Sp., Red-spotted Butte.
Among days we played with several & Harlequin Ducks,
but could not collect any. Saw several Shrikes.
At 7 miles we collected a Gadwall from several pairs and
saw 2 Culexos. Red-throated Loons appeared for first
time and a Henry gull(?). Still some evidence of
M. minima on hill sides but stinkers now dropping
out. Weather changing and was driving rain head against
me for last 2 hours. Reached home base at 2115 after
10½ hours of moving, poling, malling and pushing boat and
was it good to get home! 28 hrs were spent in travel
under pretty rough going.
25July Pitmegea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Spent the shining and drying out. Weather raining
and windy from the NW — perhaps winter is
coming at last.
26July Day of rest and recuperation. Weather fine.
27July Raining. Went river mouth for wood. Saw Buddy
Turnstones and a flock of Pacific Eiders. Collected
a turnstone opposite the tent upon return.
28July Fall migration must be starting.
29July Rain again. Between showers we put out 20 acre
census plot on ridge to be used next year.
