Childs 1957 Journal 14 5 July Pitweyer River, Cape Soline, Alaska Three high windy days bringing warm weather from the south. There was little bird activity on the marsh, due to the wind. Made put up a wind break which has made the tent more livable in the high wind. The river has risen several inches again and think at the pole we did not loose the boat although it was afloat. It started to rain about 2000. 6 July Made woke me up at 0930 saying he thought there were caribou outside the tent. We got dressed quickly and looked out to be greeted by a sight as seldom seen by a white man since the demise of the Buffalo. There must have been at least 500 on the bar, some within 25' of the tent! And this was only a small drop in the creek of the herds counter that could be seen across and up the river. I shot one and Made got a big bull with his .22! and wounded another that died across the river. When I went out to check the transects there were caribou all over Loon Marsh as far as the eye could see and they stretched in incredible numbers up to Falcon Rock and across the river to the far summit. I could not give anywhere near an accurate estimate but there must have been anywhere from 10 to 25,000. There were more
