Child 1956 Journal July 4 Atkaonk, Meade River, Alaska Soon or later I danced with most of them. May very prety of clean girls. The records were old, scratched, and mainly kill bills, but we managed to have a wonderful time in a most natural way with truly native people. Set out 23 traps along the river edge — got one Microtus in the rain. Ed Burnell (white man, coal miner) and his wife speak English. Mrs. Bron the teacher and most of the teenagers also speak English. Communication is no trouble, all are friendly and cooperative. July 5 Ran traps (see above) and set 48 out in a different area, Found a ptarmigan nest. Weather cold and intermittent showers although not as bad as yesterday. Pitelba and Coranda got me after supper July 6 Picked up trap line: 4 Dicrostonyx, 2 Lem 2 Microtus! Eskimos brought in 6 mice 2 Lem + 4 Microtus. Set out standard line 158 traps in one area at 2100. Had dinner with Mrs. Bron & Burnells. Shanks, Drew, & Tedrow arrived 1900. The locality used above finds is incorrect. Atkaonk is 2 mi N. on the other side of the river.
