July 4th at Barrow, Meade River, Alaska
The day started bright & early, Breakfast for
the second time since arrival. This was
in anticipation of an early take-off for
the Meade. A trip to Barrow Village
from the plane leaving from the Cape
and we took off at 1330! A new pilot
Fred Maguire was being shown the route
by George Thiel, an Eskimo pilot, One passage
Chuck Perrin, USAF instructor for Guard
Observer Corps and our baggage. Make a
full load! The trip was uneventful
although 5 Snowy Owls were seen enroute.
We moosoon arrived at Barrow,
when Ed Borsdal had us over for Coffee.
They & Mrs. Bean, a delightful Eskimo teacher
had us to supper at the school. After that
it being the 4th, the village gathered in the
school for a dance, The first part was
true Eskimo dancing and singing or I
should say chanting. Only the older people
took part. About 2130 whites men, dance
began. Menu for the supper was brod'deve.
Carbon tongun & Liederberg cheese. Carbon
roast, fried chicken, potatoes, lettuce jello,
pastel, rolls, celery & carrots! Delicious!
Chuck could not dance so I took choice
with the school mam, a wonderful person.
