Calbreath 1942 Jan 9 1 1/2 mi S.E. Willow Creek, 600 feet Humboldt Co. Call the area known as th Park Ranch. It is located just off the Friday Ridge Road and is 4 miles south and 3/4 miles west of Willow Creek and at an elevation of 2400 ft. The Steller Jays and Varied Thrushes were easily drawn out into sight by calls. The crows and Chickadees on the other hand were heard but would not move into sight. Just before we reached the opening around the ranch a Oregon Crow was slated but we were unable to call him in. Just as we reached the opening around the ranch we flushed a band of 10-15 Mountain Goats and they were taken by the two of us. Walking in order through the mixed timber of Black Oak and Douglas Fir I was giving the Oregon Call call in an attempt to bring the Chickadees down. I changed the call to a squeak and as I turned then sat a Redhawk not more than 50 feet above me in the Oaks. I was unable to shoot but noticed that the birds coloring was dark brown with light undercoloring and streaked with light reddish brown. Approximate size of the bird was 20 to 24 inches. Coming in we stopped at the Forest Service Station in Baldy and looked over the U.S. Topo map of this area as well as the National Forest Map of this area.
