Calbreath 1942 Jan 3, 3 miles N. Trinidad, 300 ft., Humboldt Co., Cold were several Myrtle scrubbs. I walked up stream over some mostly land which was headed by thickets of ferns, Solal and Myrica californica. Around the border of this area were numerous 30-50 foot Douglas fir and Spruce. The ground was chiefly covered by a thick matting moss and tall grasses and rushes. Some 6 or 7 Vailed thrushes were seen in quick flight from one Myrtle thicket to another, but always they remained under the dense canopy of the Myrtle when one approached and no call seemed to spite them. When they were extremely common common in this area, along with the Robins. Other birds observed were Cooper hawk, Pipits, Steller Jay, and Knights. One Brush rabbit was collected on this bog. # 61 ff. The postman in Trinidad reported that early last spring the ducks were numerous at Big Lagoon and then heavy rains flooded the area so bad the feeding ground was destroyed and the birds left. Now the water level is normal but the feeding and nesting grounds are limited. Departure of specimens was held up with a black-out called along the coast in this area tonight. Jan 4. Drive from camp to a location one mile south of Big Lagoon Bridge on highway 101.
