Itinerary
Berkeley to Weott California.
Dec 27 Dr Miller, Ward Russell and I departed from
Berkeley at CANON Highway 46 for Red Bluff.
It was dark cold and with a brisk wind
from the north east. It was rainy over
we drove through rain to Tulain and
from that point on the droplets began
to crystallize and at Williams it turned to
snow that was covering the ground to a
depth of 1/2 to 1 inch. At Williams plans
were changed and we crossed the.
mountains on highway 20 through Olsdal,
instead of going further north to Red Bluff.
At elevations of approximately 1000', the snow
began to pile up to a depth of 6 inches on the
east facing slopes. Along the flats of the valley
floor numerous dark colored Jockrabbits were
running around in a sort of amazement
possibly due to the unusual snow at this
elevation. Two crows were observed running over
the snow. Most of the other birds were seeking shelter
from the snow under the trees and low brush,
with the exception of some flocks of sparrows. Near
the summit on highway #20 the snow was 6-8"
deep on the level and this resulted in
delaying our trip when we stopped to help
some of the cars without chains. Just over
the summit we were in Loke Co and the.
