Panache Creels, 630 ft., Fresno Co., Calif
Jun 6.
were set, about 20 yds apart,
and spaced at 10 yd intervals with
in each line. Much sign of
rodent activity, at least 2 sizes of
'dip' holes. I expect D ingens
and h. hermanni at this locality.
10" Simon live traps, non-folding,
were used with Hertz m.w. Houston &
Zerlil food as bait at the second
locality, up the road with Lock 2043
immediately west of the hill, less
sign was seen, some smaller holes,
some on a slope. I would expect
D. hermanni and micratusdes here.
The day was clear, but cool, about 50,
with temperatures falling rapidly
at night. I camped at a picnic
area near Panache Creels. The moon
had almost set at 6:15 P.M., and the
night was still, cold, and dark in
the absence of moon. Habitat
generally arid scrub with bare
flats, almost devoid of vegetation.
No cattle at present but sign of
many years of cow grazing.
Jun 7
Before very cold at night, a layer of
frost covering all. I awaked at 04:00
A.M. and turned on the car engine,
then drove to San Joaquin area,
returning to Panache at 7:15 A.M.
just at sunrise. I caught only
one animal, a Fresno Kangaroo Rat,
at site #2. He was frozen
solid! At site 1, I had better luck
