March 24 needed in two vegetational associations is surrounding areas to determine the limits of the population. While not nearly as abundant as Merionis, it is found regularly in the correct habitat around juniper flats, at least in the southern borders of the flats, on the gravelly slopes where Caleogyne (perhaps the critical factor) is dominant. We caught 14 individuals, probably less than 50% of the population in the habitat we sampled. The entire population size, in all areas of suitable habitat, may be very large, especially if it occurs in the Caleogyne on the lower flanks of juniper flats.
October 3 Left Los Angeles at 6:40 a.m., driving with Luni Lester of Los Angeles to Mus of Nat History (in his car). Arrived at 29 Palms by 10:00 am, via Old Woman Spring Road. At 1:00 pm, met park superintendent Howe Ranse; talked for 45 min. He seemed friendly on the surface, but uninformed and resentful of our presence, dwelling on past closures and cautioning us on our activities.
