April 9.
6 mi. W. Nacoja Bridge, Seconio Co., Utah
Found a campsite. I re-organized our
equipment, then brought food in to have
lunch at 3:30 PM. A few snow flakes
began falling, and by 4:00 PM the canyon
was rapidly being covered with a wet
snow. We packed back into the car and
I decided to take one more trip back to
Monarch Canyon - 30 miles away - to see if
topping was possible yet - for this was
the last opportunity to top today. We
arrived at 5:30, and the wind was
blowing about 35 mph, steady, but the
cold air made the overall temperatures
being in the 40's, and rain was lightly
coming down. We decided that it was
pointless to try here, and headed
for Waldo Hole, Arizona. Due to our
late start, we arrived in St. George,
Utah about 9:30 at night. Ross
was more anxious to camp, and offered to
pay for a motel room. He did, and we
spent the night in a noisy motel room
at the east end of St. George. It made
me appreciate the quiet of the
desert (although it did have a shower)
even more than before. The room had only
one bed, so I used our camp cot.
