5 mi. SE. Wendell, Lassen Co., Calif.
sept 30
We followed Rt. 49 North to Loyalton
Then cut E. to U.S. 395, finally
auditing the Calif. Agri. Sur. Sta,
despite the fact that I had a permit
to collect samples in Nevada, I didn't
want to argue with an over-zealous
agent. We then drove to the north
shore of Honey Lake, thanks to the
road to Wendell, going SE along the
East shore of the Lake. Once
past Wendell we looked for likely
sites. There were occasional
pigeon flats on the left of the road,
but the lake side was covered with
Sarcobates. At the junction of the
lodge entrance to the ammunition
depot, we found a sandy area, with
sage on the dunes. We set 33
Trops here and drove 1/2 mi'
SE to an excavated site, setting
26 Trops here. The soil was
more gravelly here, with sage (Artemesia
tridentata) as the dominant. The
night was overcast, not too windy,
temperature about 40 °F. At 9:00
PM two army security officers
came to investigate our lights.
