Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Co., Calif.
75' ft elev, on south slope of coniferous forest of
Lowland and Douglas Fir, Redwood, Bishop Pine,
and Coast Hemlock. Santa Ysabel, west end.
2:45 PM bird seen on short limb, near trunk, of
Lowland Fir; uttering piping, ringing cries.
Flew away to west, deep into grove of trees, where
it was heard hammering. Black body, white red head.
4:05 PM another bird seen farther east along
trail in Douglas Fir, hammering at limb [illegible]
It hopped out on limb, hammering away.
Then it flew back near the trunk and went
to underside of tree, hanging upside down
and hammering.
