Triturus torosus
May 17 Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Co., California
5:00 pm
One individual found in road leading east through runic where lies Russian Gulch State Park. Road runs through tall, very slender, and very numerous red alders which are surrounded at the base by ferns and small unidentified (as yet) herbaceous plants. The spot where Triturus sp. was found was still puddly from the recent rain that day. The ground was soaked and trees were dripping. Triturus was very rough skinned, in terrestrial condition. Had dark brown - black back, bright yellow orange underparts. Was slowly moving southeast toward the creek. But this seems too late for breeding season. Possibly Triturus was just wandering about on the wet, north slope of the canyon. Observed in female.
May 24 Very small Triturus found in road leading to falls at east end of canyon.
