May 19 Russen Gulch State Park, Mendocino, Calif.
backed through. Jean led me up the hill to
the north, through redwoods, Bishop's Juno,
and Red Alder to a pygmy forest of
cypress at the top of the hill. Just before
reaching the crest of the hill we passed
some pink rhododendron which were
growing in great 15-20 foot high shrub.
The pygmy forest dried out and a sort
of chaparral grew up was occupied the
crest of the hill. After returning to camp,
we prepared our catch from the night before.
I mislaid one of our Peromyscus so
reduced our net result by one. At 4:00 p.m.
France, Viola and I walked down
to the beach open coast with sandy
beach. Our particular section, directly
next Low Camp is a little Cove surrounded
on the north & south by high cliffs,
covered front to the water level by
Bishop's Juno, Douglas fir, Red Alder and
rock plants in all of Hummingbird
was darting about the flowers in the
rocks. Turkey Vultures were soaring overhead
and Violet Swallows were erratically
zoooping over the bridge. At 7:15 we set
23 traps w/ F 1 camp.
