May 30 Mt Cedar Grove S Fork Kings R, 4600 ft, Fresno Co, Calif.
Lampropeltis multicincta
(115) Caught this Coral King Snake on the trail
between Roaring R. Falls and Zumwalt
Meadows, on the S. bank of the S. Fork of
Kings R. Moved snake with lizard noose
but snake was too heavy. So had to grab
snake by the back of the head and put
it into lizard bag. Animal was caught
on bank of stream, 4 ft. from water,
under alders, near rocks but in sandy
soil. Day was warm, sunny. Snake
was playing in shade of trees mostly but
when first seen was in warm sunshine
pointing toward river. Put snake up
after chloroforming it slowly - to avoid
kinks. Then slit snake's ventral side
with longitudinal slit every 4 inches,
and injected him (it ?) with formalin.
Put him in formalin jar.
