down off a telephone wire to something in the wheat field below. A Sparrow Hawk hovered above a wheat field then dove into it. A Ground Squirrel sat on a Fence Post. Linnets (?) in flocks flew over the fields. He came down from the pines into these grain fields through oak country. The transition from Canadian English Sparrows worked in pairs. Falcons (?) flew in pairs - swiftly over the fields. We reached Fresno at 7:25, breakfasted at Terry's Saddle Shop - had the specialty - Pat and Oda returned to Southern Calif. and continued on at 8:07 A.M., Linnets, Meadowlarks numerous. Heard Killdees. Reached Modera on Highway 99 at 8:31/2. Here we saw Meadowlarks, Brewer's Blackbirds, Linnets, Crows, Redwing Blackbird, Marsh Hawk (?), Sparrow Hawk. At 9:40 reached Merced, continued, seeing Blackbird flock, Redwings, Meadowlark, Black Jeyes above a plough, English Sparrows. Modesto 10:45. Here we turned off H 99 to Highway 132 which took us to Vernalis. From here we took 33 to Tracy, then 50 or as far as Walnut Creek, where we lunched. We followed the Fish Ranch Road into Ber-
