Crowley 1942 Journal Park June 3 Camp Azaleas, Mrs. General Grant Headquarters, 6700 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Mt. Chickadee pop its head out of a small round (old woodpecker's) hole in a dead stump - 3-4 ft. off ground. The bird flew away, returned and re-popped. Had a rest in the stump. He saw a Calif. Mule deer. He gazed in awe at the Gen. Grant tree, hiked along the trail to the north-west of it for 1 mi. There we heard a Mt. Juno, saw Gray Squirrel, Fly-catcher. We returned to the tree and as we exposed toward camp Mrs. Grennell identified a Red-breasted Nuttall for us. He saw this bird as we followed a small stream [which flows and eventually along the ravine to the SW of Gen. Grant tree]. Up near camp, we rejoined Harvey, Bob and Jean. They were out on a huge log in the middle of a meadow (very boggy meadow). Hyla were croaking and sliding Harvey's slingshot. He showed the others our 7 or Sparrow nest and returned to our camp site. We had dinner at 6:00 P.M. about. Bob fixed our first course - a snowball-fruit-cocktail. An old Princeton dish no doubt - a dash of orange and grape fruit laced with snow fresh from drifts.
