June 1. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif.
Set 15 traps along West Fork of Sheep Creek above bridge near junction of Fork with S. Fork Kings River. Traps were set in same places as May 31 - along west bank of creek under Incense Cedar, Sugar and Yellow Pine, on pine needles, at edges of rocks and fallen logs.
Caught 10 Peromyscus boylii under log (see diagram of area made May 31), which lie 1/2 ft. from log under which 2 Peromyscus were caught May 31. Prepared specimen in formon (no. 117). At 1:30 I set off on the road leading west from camp, to Sheep Creek Camp Grounds. On the way I saw a pair of Purple Finches on the topmost branches of an oak tree. A Flycatcher with a long tail and black throat wheeled and darted after insects from the same tree. Robins in pairs flew through the woods to either side of the road.
A pair of Chickadees worked busily, feeding in the topmost branches of an oak on the road near the sign "Sheep Creek Camp". A Chipping Sparrow trilled from a conifer.
A pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks were in the same oak as the Chickadees. She or Grosbeak sang beautifully as he fed.
An Ash-throated Flycatcher perched on the bare limb of a Sequoia decurrens, 100 ft. up.
