could head him off). As we cornered him
he started to burrow or slither into the soft
earth near the river, headfirst. I grabbed
it by the back of the neck and held on till
it was safely in the bag. On my return trip,
a rattler slithered into a pile of rocks
near the trail, but this snake I did
not attempt to collect. After dinner,
the J. DeMay and the members of our party
chatted briefly. Then most of us left to
set traps. Ida DeMay and I set ours
west of camp near the bridge across the low
part of the West Fork of Sleep Creek - just
before it joins King River. Ida set her
traps below the bridge while I set my
15 Museum Special Mouse traps above,
on the west bank of the creek. Upon our
return, we sat about a campfire, toasted
marshmallows and sang. Till 10:15 P.M.
