Crowley 1942 Journal May 30 Cedar Grove, S.F. on Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. The g. parent bird was off the nest when I climbed up in the yellow Pine to see the nest. The parent birds both came rushing to the scene and called frantically. The g. even flew to the neighboring tree and perched, yelling at us. We saw a Tanager high up in a Yellow Pine singing his metallic, Robin-like call. A pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks were working about the top of a Golden Oak. At 12:45 Ida, Jean and I left camp - Jean to investigate the American Dipper's nest under the bridge near the ranger's station, Ida and Co. to hunt Sceloporus. Jean stopped at the bridge, while Ida and I took the road along the south bank of Kings River to Sentinel Camp. We hunted along logs and rocks - Ida caught seven Sceloporus in the course of the afternoon. Somewhere in the campground we parted and I set out for Jemswelt Meadows. I heard a Chipping Sparrow, Bartles Purple Finches, saw a Chipmunk. A Creeper worked up the huge trunk of a Yellow Pine. A flycatcher with dark sides and white front perched on a bare limb of a Valley Oak. On the trail to Roaring River Falls - I heard a Crossbill Vireo, Western Tanager, Chipping Sparrow, saw innumerable lizards which escaped.
