May 25 Cedar Grove S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft. Fresno Co., Calif.
arrived at camp at 11:5 AM. Marie had not
yet returned (I was supposed to meet her
at the Calliope's nest but had not seen
her). So I raced up the mountain again
to the Calliope's nest and back down
to camp, getting there at 12:15. Marie
had arrived in the meantime. After
lunch, Mr. Dixon took us to Gramwalt
Meadow; (1:00 P.M.). He drove to the point
at which Kings R. makes a right hand turn. After
parking the car, we took the trail past Brown's
River falls, east along Kings River to Gram-
walts Meadows. On route we saw place
where deer had been pawing for fungi. We
heard a Warbling Vireo. Mr. Dixon shot a
7 or Sparrow. He set traps about homes of
Neotoma streatori. Mr. Dixon pointed out
the "Jimmie bird," the Cassin's Vireo.
He saw a White-headed Woodpecker. Mr. Dixon
shot a Marble-Faced. Redwing Blackbirds
flew about the meadow. A O'Allan Hummer
was flying about perches at the east end of
the table slope. He reached the middle of
the meadow by scrambling over the tables
at the base of the mountain. He reached
a patch of meadow, with grass, cattails and
willows. I set 4 Museum Special Traps.
