Crowley 1942 Journal May 24 Cedar Grove, S Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Toward Cedar Grove along the road. Two Cassin's Purple Finchers were feeding on the ground but flew into a Yellow Pine when I came along. At 2:30 Marie met me and we walked eastward along the highway. A White-headed Woodpecker was working in the middle branches of a Sequoia. Caught 2 Sceloporus in Sunset Tunnel Campground. Retracing our path, we found a Sceloporus hunting ground at 3:45. Caught 2 small, 1 more large then 2 more small. A peculiar antec was observed: One lizard was standing on top of a log with its Tail up at an angle. Another chased it off the top of the log and underneath. Probably show territorial behavior. A Hairy Woodpecker was working on a pine. A Coyote crossed the road and trotted up the south slope of the canyon. A large number of Sceloporus were chasing about boulders and a large decaying fallen log by the roadside. Many gnats were flying about and I caught one small lizard with a fly's wing still projecting from its mouth. After bagging even here, we returned to camp. After dinner we put up our specimens. Weather: cool as usual in morning. Hot and sunny in afternoon.
