Crowley 1942 Journal May 23 Cedar Grove S Lake Range R. 4600 ft. Fresno Co. Caly. May 23, 1942 a large yellow rump patch and a yellow spot about the head, flew to an oak. It fluttered up the branches then flew off to the north. Checking with Hoff- man later, I presumed it was an Andulm Warbler. Jean Russell joined me at this point and we continued up the trail together, alternately looking for birds and lizards. After plung- ing down a precipitous bank after one, I hooked him by the hind legs and let him wriggle free. Jean continued on toward the top of the mountain but I turned back toward Marie and trail lunch, just as we saw the first patch of snow. As I re- traced my steps, I saw a Junco at the junction of the stream and trail, the bird giving forth a short call note and also the spring song. Sumps were fly- ing above. A Woodpecker with black wings, white underparts and white about the back - rump patch - and black & white lines over the eye, flew to the top of a dead cedar to join its mate.
