Colymbus caspicus
June 16 5350 ft. 1 mi. SW Emigrant Gap, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 adult
on 1/4 x 1/8 mi. reservoir which is skimpily bordered by sedges.
June 27 Little Washoe Lake, 5020 ft. Washoe Co., Nevada - 2+ pairs
seen on this 30-acre lake, which has abundant aquatic
flora, scattered patches of tules, and presumably many
small fish. Several miles of marshy land lie
between this lake & Big Washoe, probably providing
good nesting habitat, but we had no time to explore.
July 12 about 70 adults on the N. end of the
lake, many of them on or near the 30+
mostly
NESTS which were floating in an area
of Polygonum amphibium in 4-5 ft. deep water.
The nests here were made of the same
plant wound around in a small dome
which barely protruded above the surface,
a few nests in nearby Scirpus stand
were made of that. All nests seen
closely (6+) held eggs which the adults
covered with wet Polygonum when
leaving them about as I approached
some 50-60 ft. away.
July 26 50+ ads. sat. on N. end of lake (which, however,
was not visited this trip, so nests not checked).
Aug. 7 E side Boca Res. 5560 ft. Nevada & Calif. - 1 on large
reservoir, diving occasionally. None here on prairie visits.
Aug. 9 Little Washoe L. [see above] - about 50 ads & 20+
small young seen on weed filled lake.
Aug. 23 Still numerous. Many downy young 1/2 grown young.
