July 27 Crosser Cr. 5650 ft.; 2 mi. E, 1½ mi. S Hobart Mills, Nevada
Co., Calif. - 1 seen in willows (scattered clumps) along
stream in grassy valley some 200 yards wide.
Aug. 1 E. end Lake Van Norden, 6760 ft., Placer Co., Calif.
1 seen & heard singing (both in a.m. & p.m.) in willows
by a in mouth of Inlet Creek. This is almost
certainly indicative of an up-mountain
movement since the breeding season, for
on frequent previous visits here this summer,
none were found.
Aug. 4 N. side Bear Valley, 4570 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - A pair
seen feeding several fledglings in a near the
base of an isolated willow shrub amid
tall, dense grass. Altho the grass here is
fairly green yet, the meadow is drying rapidly
& the nearest water is 150 to 200 yards away
(Bear Cr.). The only other nearby shrubs or
trees are a few scattered about a small
rock outcrop in this intervening distance.
Aug. 5 Cisco Grove [see p. 1] - 3 seen (1 singing).
- Beside farmland SE & E of it, 4500 ft., Washoe Co., Nev.
Many seen or heard on brief stops or from car.
Aug. 15 E. end L Van Norden [see above] - 1 seen.
Aug. 16 Cisco Grove [see p. 1] - 2 adults seen carrying food
(caterpillars) to 4 young in a nest placed 20" or
above ground in a bent-over young cottonwood
with willow stems coming thru it. One of the young
was still in the larger part of the shell, but was
able to lift his head. Another broken shell also in nest.
