Melospiza lincolnii

July 31 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see p.1] - pair in the territory
near the stream (not the same one as July 3 NEST)
now have young either in or out of the nest,
judging by their carrying of caterpillars
& constant scolding when we stay nearby.
Aug. 1 E. end L. Van Norden, 6760 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - singing
(a.m. & p.m.) from willow thickets over the masses
of water plants in the still slightly flooded
inlet creek bed just above lake shore proper.
Aug. 5 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - only 1 still singing
& that not very often. Last heard on Aug. 8,
Aug. 11,14,16 - single birds seen in breeding areas.
+ 1 glimpsed (near Mary L.) on Aug. 25.
May still have been present in full breeding
numbers & young, but too secretive
as usual
to be found when I was afield, with
8 to 15 Audubon campers accompanying
me.
