Melospiza lincolnii
June 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass,
off Placer Co., Calif. - 2 singing, each in a separate,
but contiguous area of willows in wet
meadow opposite [illegible] of the creek from the lodge.
June 24 July 1 These 2 still singing regularly in the
same areas of tall willows. Their territories
seem to be about 3/4 to 1 acre in minimum
size - perhaps much larger. The line
of separation between them seems to be
a 50 to 150 ft. wide swath which has been
cleared of tall growth & now has only
low (1-1½ ft.) willows & sprouting herbs.
June 29 - 7100 ft., 1¼ mi. S Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 singing
from a 1½-acre willow-alder thicket at head of
wet grassy slope by Mary Lake. It flew
up to a light electric wire 10 ft. above the
shrubs & sang from there about 15-20 times.
N. end Serena L., 6880 ft., Placer Co., Calif. - 1 singing
from small area of willows along lake shore,
with pine- fir forest behind it.
July 1 - 6900 ft., 3¼ mi. SW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 1 singing from
a very small clump (<½ acre) of willows in wet,
boggy opening of forest edge facing on R.R. snowshed.
One was found here regularly in summer of 1948 also.
July 3 near Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - Still 2 singing.
One male & associated non-singer (= ?) traced
to a NEST of 4 small young. It is placed on
the wet ground amid dense young herbs by 1 ft. willow
