mid-July near Sugar Bowl Lodge 7000ft. & L Van Norden, 6800ft. 1.2 mi. SSW (respectively) & 2 to 4 mi. W, Donner Pass, Glacer Co., Calif.- Common in all willow thickets of any extent - and foraging on adjacent open ground. Songs still frequent, especially in early a.m. & evening.
Behavior of adults at the lake on July 18 indicated they had fledglings in the willows. Similar action near the lodge on July 20, although no young were seen. Perhaps the scolding & following of intruders merely indicates young present, either in the nest or out, but the adults certainly do not respond faster when the vicinity of a nest with eggs is invaded.
July 27 Brewer Cr., 5650ft., 2 mi. E, 1½ mi. S Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif.- 2+ in sparse willows along stream in open grassy flat. Surrounding slopes are covered by sagebrush & arid Jeffrey pine forest.
- Little Truckee Rvr valley, 5800ft., 3 mi. E, 5 mi. N Hobart Mills, Nevada Co., Calif. About 10 found in 10 minute walk across similar, but wetter, valley. Included were several in juvenile plumage, the first I've noted this season. ads.
July 31 Sugar Bowl Lodge [see above] - 2, banded in same traps as the 1 on July 2. These are #s 48-110627 & -628, one pair seen carrying food (caterpillars) in willows of "Cowgill meadow" beyond this stream. Some are still singing, although volume & frequency are less.
