Zonotrichia leucophrys
(orianta)
June 17 near Sugar Bowl Lodge, 7000 ft., 1.2 mi. SSW Donner Pass, Placer Co., Calif. - 8-12 jrs. in the willow thickets of "Cowgill meadow" on N facing slope at base of Disney Peak.
1 pair was seen copulating, or at least attempting it,
4 times in quick succession. The ? each time
postured with tail held up at 70° angle, wings
down & quivering, a head up, bill slightly open.
The male ran along the ground from distances as
far as 8 ft. & mounted immediately when she so
postured. The whole process lasted about 30-40 sec.
Another pair noted while the ? was carrying
a .2 with long tuft of some 30-35 whitish mammal
hairs (dog?). She hopped thru the bushes for
some time with it, & the ? interrupted his
singing to come join her in scolding me. She
eventually dropped the hair on the ground amid
the willow stems.
Late June - Singing was noticeably stronger & more
persistent after the snow was melting rapidly
from willow thickets & buds were breaking
into tiny leaves or about June 20-25.
June 22 E side Boca Res., 5100 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - Several
singing from sagebrush (!!) on dry flat just
above small, wet grassy swales. No
willows or other large, soft leaved shrubs
anywhere near.
June 24 W end Donner L. 6000 ft., Nevada Co., Calif. - 1 heard
singing in willow thickets amid aspens & pines,
& some open grass along Shelt Creek.
